BEIRUT
Synopsis
I 1972 mister den amerikanske diplomat Mason Skiles på tragisk vis sin kone og adoptivsøn i Beirut, da nogle terrorister angriber et cocktailparty. Ti år senere arbejder den ensomme, alkoholiserede Skiles som forhandler i erhvervslivet i New England, da han bliver kontaktet af den amerikanske stat. Officielt vil de have ham til at vende tilbage til Beirut for at holde en forelæsning, men Skiles’ virkelige opgave er at forhandle sig frem til en byttehandel: en terrorleder til gengæld for en CIA-agent. Men intet er, som det lader til at være. Skiles tvinges ikke kun til at konfrontere fortidens spøgelser, men står over for et frygteligt dilemma: Hvem kan man stole på i en verden, hvor sandheden kun viser sig, når det er belejligt?
